How it works:

A Hall effect (magnetic) pick-up is mounted into the distributor in place of the contact points or old type optical pick-up, and a metal composite rotor is fitted onto the distributor cam. As the distributor shaft rotates the metal rotor passes through the magnetic pick-up producing a pulse, which is fed to a High Performance ignition module via a wiring loom with water-proof connections. The module converts this pulse into a current feed to the coil, in turn producing a high energy spark.

The Original Equipment components used in the manufacture of Magna-Spark ensure that the system is supremely robust and reliable. Waterproof connections are used throughout to overcome the problems found in other retro-fit systems.

The Magna-Spark Ignition Module is so advanced that it will give all the benefits of electronic ignition with any coil. However, when used in conjunction with a high performance coil the system will produce maximum spark energy at all engine speeds.
                                                                    

Don't confuse Magna-Spark with other electronic systems such as the Lumenition Optronic or Magnetronic. Those systems are fixed dwell and do not give any significant improvement in top-end performance. Neither should they be used with a low resistance coil such as the Lucas Sports Coil as they will cause the coil to overheat at high revs and ultimately fail.

Other systems which place the ECU inside the distributor are also prone to failure. They may look pretty but are liable to overheat, leading to a short life. Ask what temperature the system is rated to, and if it is less than 100°C you could be in trouble next time you are in a traffic jam. The ECU should always be kept as cool as possible which is why the Magna-Spark module is mounted on a heat-sink and designed to be located away from heat sources. It can be hidden anywhere, even on the inside of the bulkhead, so it will not detract from the period look of the vehicle.
